How do I start kendo at Hizen?
First visit the dojo and watch a practice.
We ask that everyone visits the dojo the week before starting so that you can see how lessons are conducted and ask any questions you may have.
It is best to come and watch Thursday night so you can see the type of general class you will be working towards and collect membership forms, then join the beginners class the following week. Return completed forms with photo and you may start.
Do I need to arrange my visit?
No, please just turn up!
There is no fee for watching a class and you will be made welcome. You do not have to contact us to ask if you can visit, or to tell us you are coming (unless you have special needs).
When are beginners classes?
We are not limited to school terms like some clubs, beginners may start at any time throughout the year. Please check the website home page for any time changes before you come.
How much does it cost?
Membership cost is set on a sliding scale over the year and would range from £20 - £100 depend which month you start. Then there is a £5 practise charge each time you come. These costs cover, hall rently and the use of club equipment. The only additional cost is membership to the B.K.A for insurance. There are reductions for those who are in full time education or unemployed.
Thursday's are not convenient for me, can I have private lessons?
No. Practicing in the dojo as a group is an important aspect of learning kendo.
Thursday's are not convenient for me, can I just practice on the Tuesday lesson?
You will need to attend the beginners practice on Thursday's to develop the kendo basics.
At what age can I join Hizen?
You have to be at least 18yrs old to practice at Hizen Kendo Club.
What equipment do I need to start kendo?
None. When you start kendo at Hizen, we will lend you a shinai (bamboo sword) all you need is to wear loose clothing such as tracksuit pants and a teeshirt.
When can I start wearing armour?
It will take several weeks learning basics before you are ready to wear armour, the Chief Instructor will tell you when you are ready. At this time you will be able to borrow club armour until you are ready to buy your own armour.
Can I buy my own equipment now anyway?
It is a good idea that you seek advice from the Instructor or senior member before investing in your own armour.
I have another question can I email you?
Please look at the FAQ page and the rest of the website first to see if your question is answered there; if not, we will be happy to answer any question you may have either at the dojo or by email.
